How to Photograph Your Birthday Cake (Without a Professional Camera)
Get gorgeous birthday cake photos using just your phone — lighting tips, angles, and styling secrets that make every shot look professional.

You've put time and love into creating a beautiful birthday cake with a stunning topper. The last thing you want is blurry, dimly lit photos that don't do it justice. Here's how to capture it perfectly — no professional camera needed.
Lighting Is Everything
Natural light is your best friend. Place the cake near a window with indirect sunlight — not direct sun, which creates harsh shadows. The soft, diffused light you get on a slightly overcast day is ideal. Avoid using your flash at all costs — it flattens everything and creates unflattering reflections.
If natural light isn't available, position a lamp to one side of the cake at roughly 45 degrees. This creates a gentle shadow that gives the cake depth and dimension in photos.
Choosing Your Background
A clean, uncluttered background makes the cake the star. A white wall, a wooden table, or a plain-coloured tablecloth all work beautifully. If you want something more styled, a piece of wrapping paper or fabric in a complementary colour makes an easy backdrop.
Our cake toppers are designed to stand out in photos — the glitter on our animal figurine toppers catches the light, and the iridescent card of our personalised toppers shimmers beautifully.
The Best Angles
Three angles always work well:
- Front-on at eye level — shows off the topper and decorations clearly
- 45-degree angle slightly above — flattering and shows the top of the cake beautifully
- Directly above (flat lay) — dramatic and great for circular cakes
Move around the cake and take multiple shots. You can delete later — take everything now.
Styling the Shot
Props make photos feel intentional rather than rushed. Scatter a few fresh flowers, candles, or ribbons around the base of the cake. A linen napkin or a few cutlery pieces adds lifestyle feel. Keep props simple — the cake and topper should remain the focal point.
Phone Camera Tips
Clean your phone lens (seriously — it makes a huge difference). Tap the screen where the cake is to focus on it specifically. Use portrait mode if your phone has it — it blurs the background beautifully. Shoot several versions and choose the best. Edit slightly in your phone's built-in editor: increase brightness a touch and add a little warmth.
The Candid Candle Moment
The moment the candles are lit and the birthday child leans in is the photo everyone wants. Have someone positioned ready with the camera. Get down to the child's level rather than shooting from above. The glow of candles combined with a gorgeous cake topper makes for truly magical photos.
Create a photogenic centrepiece with our animal cake toppers and personalised cake toppers — handmade to look stunning in every photo.
