Pirate Birthday Party Ideas for Kids
Ahoy! Set sail for adventure with these swashbuckling pirate party ideas — treasure hunts, ship cakes, and everything in between.
Pirate parties are one of the all-time classic children's birthday themes — and for good reason. They combine adventure, storytelling, treasure, and dressing up into one gloriously fun package. Here's how to make it brilliant.
The Pirate Ship Cake
A rectangular cake carved into a ship shape with chocolate buttercream and a wafer paper skull-and-crossbones flag is the traditional route. A simpler option: a round blue ombre cake (the ocean) with a chocolate ship cutout and our Cow Cake Topper wearing a miniature pirate hat — quirky and completely charming. Add our Black and Gold Name and Age Topper for a sophisticated, on-theme finishing touch.
Pirate Treasure Hunt
The treasure hunt is the centrepiece activity. Create a map (age it with tea and burn the edges slightly), write clues leading around the house or garden, and hide a treasure chest (a shoebox spray-painted gold) filled with gold chocolate coins and small toys. Children of all ages love this — even the adults secretly enjoy it.
Costumes
Ask guests to come in pirate costume. Keep it simple: stripy tops, bandanas, and eye patches are easy to source cheaply. Provide a dressing-up box with extra props for children who arrive without costumes.
